OREGON CITY, Ore. – Fishery managers from Oregon and Washington set spring chinook salmon and sturgeon fishing seasons for the Columbia and Willamette rivers today during a joint state hearing.
Several fisheries, including those in the Willamette River and in the Columbia River between Bonneville Dam and the river mouth, are currently open under permanent rules and will remain open through February. The seasons adopted today will take effect March 1.
Action: Closes smelt fishery, prior to the scheduled closing date of March 31.
Effective dates: March 11, 2010.
Species affected: Eulachon smelt.
Location: Mainstem Columbia River.
Reason for action: The 2010 mainstem fisheries were developed to act as a test fishery in an effort to gauge the abundance of the 2010 return. The 2010 smelt run appears to be complete and no additional fishing time is required. This rule also is consistent with the Columbia River Compact action of March 8, 2010.
